About The Cave DSM & Jazz Sessions

The Cave DSM hosts the Community Jazz Center's monthly jam sessions providing a downtown venue for young musicians to develop their skills and passion for jazz.

CJC Jam Sessions

Since 1988 the Community Jazz Center has been hosting jam sessions exclusively for middle school to high school students. These sessions are led by a trio of working jazz musicians from the Des Moines community who provide real-time mentorship and accompaniment.

Learning Experience

Students meet young musicians from around central Iowa and many have formed combos and lifelong friendships through these sessions. They develop valuable skills including teamwork communication leadership and self-confidence while experiencing the thrill of jazz improvisation outside of school settings.

Performance Opportunities

Participating students may pursue playing opportunities with the CJC Youth Combo or the CJC Big Band. The sessions focus on learning and growth with professional rhythm section players and occasional special guests creating an invaluable educational experience.
