World Cafe Live
World Cafe Live opened in 2004 as a nonprofit partnership between WXPN radio and entrepreneur Hal Real, creating a new model for independent music venues. The facility houses two performance spaces, restaurant service, music shop, and WXPN's radio studios in a converted Art Deco factory.
What They Offer Patrons: The Lounge upstairs offers casual dining and live music for 200+ guests with intimate stage and large windows. The Music Hall downstairs is a three-tiered concert venue holding 300 seated or 650 standing, hosting nationally known artists in sophisticated bistro-style setting. Eclectic American cuisine with wide drink selection available at all shows. Smoke-free environment since opening. Accessible from Walnut Street or 31st Street, fully ADA accessible from all levels. Programming includes Latin dance parties (Viernes Calientes), live music, and special events beyond the regular concert schedule.
What They Offer Musicians: First Tuesday monthly Philly Rising Open Mic (in partnership with REC Philly) provides platform in professional venue. Winners of monthly "Cream" competition receive five hours of studio time at Tribesound Studios, airplay on 93.7 WSTW, and opportunities to open for established acts. Performances at World Cafe Live can receive broadcast on WXPN locally or nationally on World Café radio program. Nonprofit status means mission-driven programming that prioritizes artist development. James Blunt, Matisyahu, and K.T. Tunstall all played World Cafe Live before pop stardom. Quality sound system, good sight lines, attentive audiences who came specifically for music.
