About The World Stage

Founded in 1989 by legendary jazz drummer Billy Higgins and poet Kamau Daáood - The World Stage has become a pioneering institution in South LA's music and arts landscape. This 100-capacity venue serves as both an educational space and performance gallery in the heart of Leimert Park Village - Los Angeles' African American cultural community.

Mission and Programming

The World Stage's mission is to secure - preserve and advance African American music - literature and works in the oral tradition to local - national and international audiences. The venue provides affordable weekly workshops that link youth with elders in the African American cultural tradition.

Weekly Workshops and Jams

Throughout the week - The World Stage offers various workshops including Monday's Drum Workshop - Tuesday's Jazz Vocal Workshop - Wednesday's Anansi Writer's Workshop - Thursday's Billy Higgins Instrumental Jam Session - Saturday's Jazz Workshop and Trap Drum Workshop - and Sunday's Vocal Jam Session. Most workshops are offered for a suggested $5 donation - though no one is turned away for lack of funds.

Performance Space

The venue hosts ticketed performances on Friday and Saturday evenings featuring renowned artists from the jazz world. The space fosters exchange and interaction between artists of all ages and levels - providing a nurturing environment for self-discovery - experimentation and critical feedback. Notable alumni include B Sharp Jazz Quartet - bestselling authors - Pulitzer Prize nominees and acclaimed vocalists.
