The Pocket Open Mic @ 7DrumCity: DC's Only Fully Backlined Weekly Open Mic
Every Tuesday, The Pocket — the cozy, colorful bar and performance venue inside 7DrumCity's Washington, DC complex — hands its stage to the community for what the venue calls DC's only fully backlined weekly open mic. It's a vibrant, welcoming night built for budding musicians to showcase their talents and hone their skills, and it has become one of the city's most consistent draws for a free weeknight open mic.
What the Night Looks Like
Hosted by Mufasa Verde of local group Everyday Everybody, The Pocket Open Mic leans into an intimate setting that fosters real community and collaboration rather than a quick in-and-out performance slot. Solo acts and full bands are both welcome, and the room regularly pulls in 50 or more people on a given Tuesday, giving performers a genuinely supportive, diverse audience rather than an empty bar.
Gear and Production
What sets The Pocket apart from most open mics in the city is the full backline: house drum kit, guitar amp, and bass amp, backed by top-quality lighting and sound engineering. Performers can walk in with just an instrument, or nothing at all, and still play a full, well-supported set.
How to Sign Up
Advance registrations open every Monday at 9:00 PM and are handed out first-come first-served until the night's slots fill up. Anyone who misses the advance window can still try for a walk-in lottery spot the night of the show. The venue asks that sign-up questions go to thepocket@7drumcity.com rather than a phone call to the front desk.
Good to Know Before You Go
The Pocket Open Mic is free and open to all ages, with a full bar on-site for the 21-and-over crowd. Because sign-up windows and slot counts have shifted from week to week, it's worth checking the venue's Instagram (@thepocket_dc) or its own event page for the current week's details before heading over.
Part of 7DrumCity's Music Community
The Pocket Open Mic is the longest-running community program at 7DrumCity, a Washington, DC music education and rehearsal complex at 1506 & 1508 North Capitol St NW. The same building also hosts the monthly Open House Potluck Jam, the rotating hobbyist ensemble program Flashband, private lessons, and hourly rehearsal studio rentals — making The Pocket a natural home base for musicians looking for more than just one night a week.
