Phil Brady's Bar & Grill

Phil Brady's Bar & Grill is a Mid City Baton Rouge institution and one of the most important blues rooms in Louisiana. The no-frills neighborhood bar on Government Street has hosted one of the longest continuously running blues jams in the country for four decades.

The Story Behind Phil Brady's

The building dates to the early 1940s when Government Street was just two lanes. It began as a small strip that held Angelo's Grocery and a pharmacy and Michael's Bar. Phil Brady's opened in its current form in 1978 and it still has the original bar and railing and mirrors. Owner Joe Hall took over in 2003. He kept Thursday as blues night and broadened the rest of the week with rock and zydeco and even metal along with burger specials and pool tournaments.

The Vibe

The stage is tucked into a corner and pool tables fill the room. The crowd mixes longtime regulars with students and touring musicians passing through. It feels lived in and unpretentious and that is exactly why the blues community calls it home.

The Thursday Night Blues Jam

Shannon Bayou Williford founded the Thursday jam in 1986 and it has run nearly every week since. It celebrated its 40th year in 2025. The jam has been a training ground for generations of Baton Rouge players and it still draws surprise sit-ins. Guitarist Larry Garner and singer Luther Kent have played here and Buddy Guy has stopped by to watch.

Why Musicians Love It

The jam is a walk-up sit-in format built around a house band. Players of every level can get on stage beside seasoned pros. As one regular put it you never know who you are going to see.
