Phil Brady's Bar & Grill

Phil Brady's Bar & Grill is a mid-city Baton Rouge institution housed in a building dating to the 1940s, when it operated as Michael's Bar. The current nightclub has been open since 1978 under longtime owner Joe Hall, and it still carries the original bar, railing and mirrors from its earlier life. It is best known across Louisiana as the home of one of the longest continuously running blues jams in the country.

Atmosphere and Setting

Phil Brady's is a no-frills neighborhood bar with a stage tucked into one corner, pool tables, and a crowd that ranges from longtime regulars to touring musicians passing through Baton Rouge. The room has an unpretentious, lived-in feel that has made it a comfortable home base for the city's blues community for decades.

The Thursday Night Blues Jam

Founded in 1986 by Shannon “Bayou” Williford, the weekly Thursday blues jam has run virtually every week since, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2025. The jam has served as a training ground for generations of Baton Rouge blues musicians, some of whom went on to national careers, and it continues to draw surprise sit-ins from touring artists passing through town. As one regular put it, at Brady's “you never know who you're gonna see.”
