Original Grinds

Tucked into a storefront on Caroline Street in the heart of downtown Fredericksburg, Original Grinds bills itself as an indie coffeeshop, vegan bakery and creative safe space rolled into one. It is also, by design, a sober venue — there is no bar here, just coffee, baked goods and a small stage that has become one of the most welcoming rooms in town for first-time performers.

Atmosphere and Setting

The shop leans warm and lived-in rather than polished: mismatched seating, local art on the walls, and a counter turning out vegan pastries alongside espresso drinks. Because there is no alcohol involved, the crowd skews younger and more all-ages than a typical bar open mic, and the room has a distinctly community-center feel — regulars greet each other by name, and newcomers are pulled into conversation quickly.

Open Mic Wednesdays

The shop's signature recurring event is Open Mic Wednesdays, held every Wednesday night. Sign-ups start at 7:00 PM at the counter, with the show beginning around 7:30 PM. Sets are kept to roughly 10 minutes to give everyone a turn, though the night has a habit of running past 10:00 PM when the room is full of energy. The genre mix is genuinely wide open — acoustic singer-songwriters, hip hop artists, spoken word poets and everything adjacent are all part of a typical lineup. There is no cover charge, though buying a coffee or a baked good is the customary way to support the free weekly show.

Other Programming

Original Grinds also runs Breaking Lines, a recurring poetry and spoken-word night billed as “a night of spoken word, expression, and art,” and it regularly rotates in work from local painters and visual artists on its walls. The shop has become something of a hub for Fredericksburg's younger and DIY-minded creative community, filling a niche that the town's bar-based music venues don't really reach.

Because it is a sober, all-ages space, Original Grinds is an especially good starting point for performers who are nervous about their first open mic, or for younger musicians and writers who can't get into a 21-and-up bar show. No formal audition or registration in advance is needed — just show up by 7:00 PM and add your name to the list.
