Open Mics and Jams in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

The Steel City is built on hills, rivers and bridges, and its music scene is just as layered. Pittsburgh gave the world some of the greatest jazz musicians of the 20th century, hosts one of the longest-running bluegrass jams in the country, and still keeps a neighborhood-bar open stage going on almost any night of the week. This guide covers the city's history, its music scene and venues, and where players can find open mics and open jams.

A Brief History of Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh grew up at the "Point," where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers join to form the Ohio. That strategic spot made it a prize in the French and Indian War: the French built Fort Duquesne there, and after the British took the site in 1758 they built Fort Pitt and named the settlement for British statesman William Pitt. The town became a gateway to the West, launching flatboats and settlers down the Ohio River.

Abundant coal, iron and river transport turned Pittsburgh into an industrial powerhouse in the 19th century. Andrew Carnegie's steel mills, Henry Clay Frick's coke ovens and George Westinghouse's electrical works made the region one of the wealthiest in the world and drew waves of immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe, along with Black families arriving during the Great Migration. The smoke was so thick that streetlights sometimes burned at midday.

The collapse of the American steel industry in the late 1970s and 1980s devastated the region, and the city lost roughly half its population from its peak. Pittsburgh reinvented itself around universities, hospitals, robotics and technology, led by the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon. Today its clean rivers, preserved neighborhoods and 446 bridges make it one of America's great comeback stories.

The Pittsburgh Music Scene

Pittsburgh's musical claim to fame is jazz. From the 1920s through the 1950s, the Hill District was one of the country's great Black cultural centers, anchored by clubs like the Crawford Grill. An astonishing list of jazz greats came from the city, including Earl Hines, Mary Lou Williams, Billy Strayhorn, Erroll Garner, Ahmad Jamal, Art Blakey, Ray Brown, Stanley Turrentine and George Benson. That tradition is kept alive by WZUM, the city's jazz radio station, whose Jazz Central calendar lists live jazz across the region every day, and by the University of Pittsburgh's annual Pitt Jazz Seminar, now well past its 50th year.

Folk and acoustic music have a strong home thanks to Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society, which presents concerts and supports community jams. Western Pennsylvania is also serious bluegrass territory, with deep roots in the coal towns and a busy calendar of brewery picks and festivals like the winter Ice Jam.

The city's pop and rock history runs from Stephen Foster, America's first great songwriter, to crooner Perry Como, the doo-wop of the Del-Vikings, Donnie Iris, and later hip-hop stars Wiz Khalifa and the late Mac Miller. Neighborhoods like Lawrenceville, the South Side, Bloomfield and Millvale are packed with small rooms where local bands play every week.

Tips for Playing Pittsburgh's Open Mics and Jams

  • Plan for hills and bridges. Many of the best jams are just outside city limits (Blawnox, Millvale, Dormont), so check parking and bus routes before you go.
  • Know your standards. Pittsburgh jazz jams are led by serious players. Have a couple of tunes ready in common keys, and vocalists should bring charts.
  • Follow the circle. At bluegrass jams like the Starlite, the person who picks the song leads it and nods you in for breaks.
  • Support the room. Most of these events are free; order food, tip the host and the bartender.
