Built for musicians at every level, from first-timers testing a new song to seasoned players working out material in front of a friendly room.
Monday Open Mic at Tuning Fork
Every Monday night, Tuning Fork in Studio City turns its stage over to anyone with a song to share. The all-ages, singer-songwriter open mic is free to play and free to watch: no cover, no sign-up fee.
How it works
- Sign up at 6:30 pm. The list opens when the night starts, so arriving early gets you an earlier slot.
- Play two songs. Each performer gets two songs, which keeps the list moving and gives more people a turn.
- Use the house gear. A keyboard, a guitar and a full sound system are provided, so you can show up with just your voice.
- Bring backing tracks if you like. Singers who perform to tracks just need a Bluetooth-enabled phone or device.
The night runs until about 11 pm.
The host and the room
The night is hosted by musician Joseph Stevens, who runs the sign-up list and keeps the show on track. You can follow the night on Instagram at @mondayopenmiclive and the host at @josephstevensmusic_.
Tuning Fork itself is a neighborhood gastropub that has hosted live music since opening in 2013. The kitchen stays open during the show, so you can order a burger or a drink between sets. The open mic is also pet friendly, which is rare for a music night.
Tips for first-timers
- Arrive by 6:30 pm if you want an early slot; later sign-ups play later in the night.
- Pick your two strongest songs and have a backup ready in case someone plays yours first.
- Load backing tracks offline on your phone and turn on Bluetooth before you go up.
- Stay and listen. Open mics run on goodwill, and the players you cheer for tend to return the favor.
- Reserve a table if you're bringing friends to watch, since the room is small.
