Moncus Park
Moncus Park is a 100-acre green space in the heart of Lafayette. Locals still call it the Horse Farm. Today it has trails and gardens and play areas and a dog park and it welcomes hundreds of thousands of visits every year. On Saturday mornings it is also home to the Lafayette Farmers & Artisans Market and a Cajun music jam under the oaks.
The Story Behind the Park
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette bought the land in 1920 for agricultural research and it later became known as the Horse Farm. In 2005 plans for commercial development sparked the Save the Horse Farm campaign started by two UL students. Lafayette Consolidated Government bought the land in 2012 and a nonprofit gathered more than 7,400 opinions from residents to shape a master plan. The park was named for philanthropist Jim Moncus whose lead donation launched construction. Moncus Park held its grand opening on January 1 2022.
The Park
Visitors can explore trails and native ecosystems with pollinator habitats along with meditative gardens and a Veterans Memorial. There is a play area and a permitted dog park. Fitness classes and field trips and outdoor movie nights fill the calendar.
Saturday Cajun Music Jam
Every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM professional accordionist Chad Huval leads a Cajun music jam during the farmers market. Fiddles and acoustic guitars and tub bass and washboard gather under the park's oak trees for an informal and up-close look at traditional Cajun music.
Why Musicians Like It
Players of varying skill levels are welcome to bring an instrument and sit in. It is a relaxed morning session where you can learn tunes from seasoned players while shoppers stop to listen. Bring a chair if you plan to stay and play.
The Farmers Market
The Lafayette Farmers & Artisans Market is a producers-only market for local growers and bakers and artisans. A French-language gathering spot nearby adds to the Acadiana flavor.

Moncus Park is at 2913 Johnston Street in Lafayette LA 70503. Parking is free for the first 30 minutes and $2 per hour after that. Visit moncuspark.org for events and park hours. Schedules can change so confirm with the park or host before heading out.
