Lenny's Pub

Lenny's Pub is a live music venue on Route 302 in Westbrook at Al Hawkes Plaza next to the big old HAWKES sign. It serves home-cooked food at fair prices and books live bands most weeks. Few Maine venues have deeper musical roots.

The Story Behind the Building

In 1956 bluegrass and country pioneer Al Hawkes founded Event Records here as an independent label. He also ran a recording studio and a pirate radio station from the building. From the 1960s on it became Al Hawkes Repair Plaza where Hawkes and his wife fixed televisions until 1989. The pub carries the name of Lenny Breau who grew up performing with his parents Hal Lone Pine and Betty Cody and became a guitar legend who blended country and jazz and classical and flamenco.

New Owners

Bill Umbel opened Lenny's in 2016. In March 2026 Adam Steinman and Susan Erickson and Jill Murphy took over and reopened the pub. They describe their approach as treating patrons like family and plan to honor the music Umbel built while adding more jazz and funk.

What They Serve

Chef and co-owner Susan Erickson runs the kitchen with home-cooked pub food at fair prices and dedicated gluten-free options.

Bluegrass Jam

On the first Sunday of each month from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM Lenny's hosts an intermediate to advanced bluegrass jam listed on Melissa Bragdon Caron's calendar. Brush up on standard repertoire and bring an acoustic instrument.

Why Musicians Love It

Picking bluegrass in the building where Event Records was born is hard to beat. The jam draws solid players and the room has a real sense of history.

Live Music

Regular performers include Travis James Humphries and Rose Alley along with vinyl music nights. Covers apply on Friday and Saturday and for larger acts.
