About Dyer Senior Center

Dyer Senior Center at 36745 Marquette Street in Westland is a community center for older adults, operated by Wayne-Westland Community Schools. It is also one of the friendliest places in the area for acoustic music, thanks to a public bluegrass jam that welcomes musicians and listeners of every age.

Atmosphere and Setting

The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and unhurried. Rooms are open, comfortable, and free of the noise and distractions of a bar, which makes them ideal for acoustic instruments. Participants sit close together, share songs, and swap stories, and newcomers quickly find a place in the circle.

Programs and Community

Beyond its music, the center offers fitness classes, social programs, and community services for older adults, and it serves as a meeting spot for friends and neighbors. The setting is built to make everyone who walks through the door feel included.

Music Community

The bluegrass jam is run by the Southeast Michigan Bluegrass Music Association, a group that supports players at every skill level. Banjos, fiddles, guitars, mandolins, and dobros are common, and singers are welcome too. It is an all-are-included setting where beginners can learn by sitting in and experienced players can pass along what they know.
