Cultural Hub
The Dahl Arts Center has served as western South Dakota's premier arts center since October 1974 when it was gifted to Rapid City by Arndt and Agnes Dahl following the devastating 1972 Rapid City flood. Managed by the Rapid City Arts Council on behalf of the city this municipal facility stands as a beacon of hope and cultural enrichment in the community. The center houses five professional visual arts galleries an interactive children's gallery the historic Cyclorama Mural of American History a gift shop classrooms and a flexible event space.
Performing Arts Programming
The Dahl Arts Center hosts the Emerging Performing Artists series featuring local musicians open mic opportunities and performing artists. These events take place both at the Dahl and at Main Street Square as part of the First Friday Art Walk series. The open mic nights provide a platform for emerging talent in the community with performers signing up to showcase original works covers poetry and various performance art. The center provides PA system and stage support for these events creating an inclusive environment for artists of all skill levels and backgrounds.
Community Arts
Beyond performing arts the Dahl offers extensive visual arts programming art education for youth and adults open pottery studios open art studios and teen art studios. The center serves as a multi-purpose community space used by artists and arts organizations for exhibitions classes private events and corporate gatherings. Gallery admission is free with some ticketed classes and events. The Dahl Artists Market features goods from over 50 regional artisans. Open Monday through Saturday 10 AM-5 PM the center welcomes all community members to explore creativity participate in programs and attend cultural events.
Mission & Support
The Rapid City Arts Council incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1968 manages the Dahl with a mission to champion inclusive innovative and inspiring arts opportunities to enrich the communities served. Support comes from volunteers donors members the South Dakota Community Foundation Black Hills Area Community Foundation and the South Dakota Arts Council with funds from the State of South Dakota through the Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts.
