Craft Local stands as Billings' premier nonprofit arts and music venue located on Montana Avenue. Since opening in 2017 the venue has become an essential part of the city's cultural landscape providing space for local artists to exhibit their work and musicians to develop their craft and connect with audiences.
Mission and Philosophy
Craft Local operates on four core principles: Foster Educate Support and Develop. The organization is dedicated to encouraging artisans of all types while promoting local artists craftsmen and musicians. Through various classes and workshops Craft Local helps grow the cultural scene in Billings giving new meaning to Montana Avenue as a creative corridor.
Music Programming
The venue hosts an impressive array of music events throughout the week. Wednesday nights feature the Billings Singer Songwriter Association Open Mic hosted by Almeda Bradshaw and John Adams where musicians share original compositions and covers. Thursday evenings bring jazz enthusiasts together for the weekly jazz jam session. Friday and Saturday nights showcase local and touring bands across multiple genres including rock indie folk bluegrass and alternative music.
Craft Local is notably the only venue in Billings with a consistent open mic night making it an essential platform for aspiring musicians to build their fan base develop performance skills and connect with other artists. Basic bar food including pizzas and snacks is available.
Community Impact
Under new management since late 2024 when a group of local musicians and business owners including Brian Zoller came together to save the venue from closure Craft Local continues its vital role in the Billings music community. The new management team is focused on eliminating cover charges before 8 PM for most shows making the venue more accessible and welcoming to casual visitors.
The venue serves as a bridge between generations of musicians fostering connections between established artists like John Roberts and emerging young talent. This intergenerational approach ensures the continuity and growth of Billings' music scene.
