Cite des Arts

Cité des Arts is a nonprofit performing arts center on Vine Street in downtown Lafayette. Since 2002 it has served as an open and affordable space where local artists can build new work and find an audience. On any given week the building might host a play and a concert and a comedy open mic and a bluegrass jam.

The Story Behind Cité des Arts

Cité des Arts calls itself an incubator for diverse and rising talent. Its mission is to offer an open and accessible space for grassroots arts and culture. The organization focuses on equity and community and on keeping performance space affordable for artists who might not otherwise get a stage.

The Space

The building has flexible black-box style performance areas that can be set up for theater or music or gallery events. It is intimate and informal and the seating works well for acoustic shows. Local groups can also rent the space for their own productions and events.

Monday Bluegrass Jam

Every Monday evening from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM Cité des Arts hosts a free Bluegrass Jam. It is all ages and all skill levels. Pickers gather in a circle to trade tunes and learn songs from each other. There is no sign-up so just bring an instrument and join in.

Why Musicians Like It

The jam is one of the most welcoming in Acadiana. Beginners can sit in with experienced players without pressure and families often come to listen. It is a great way to meet other musicians in Lafayette.

More Events

Cité des Arts produces readers theater and classic plays along with concerts and art shows. The Oof. Comedy Hour open mic runs on Tuesdays at 8:00 PM with sign-up by 7:45 PM.
