Chop Suey

Chop Suey is a Capitol Hill music club with high ceilings and a dark and loose feel. For more than two decades it has been a launch pad for bands and DJs from Seattle's underground. Indie rock and punk and hip-hop and electronic acts share the calendar with some of the city's favorite dance nights.

The Story Behind the Club

The room on East Madison Street has long been known for its ramshackle faux-Chinese décor and its willingness to book artists before they break big. New owners took over in 2015 and faced calls to change the name. They chose to keep it and the club reopened that March. In 2016 a kitchen opened inside the venue serving burgers and bar food.

The Vibe

Chop Suey is small and dark with a big stage for a club of its size. The crowd changes with the night. You might find a sweaty punk show one evening and a packed pop dance party the next with long-running nights like Candi Pop and Dance Yourself Clean.

Scrambler Jam

On the fourth Tuesday of the month Chop Suey hosts Scrambler Jam. It is part open mic and part open jam session with comics in supporting roles. Sign-ups start at 7:00 PM and the show starts at 8:00 PM. A full backline is provided and admission is free. The organizers say the audience is just as important as the performers.

Why Musicians Like It

Getting on a real club stage with pro sound and a full backline is rare for an open night. Scrambler Jam lets players form bands on the spot and test ideas in a room that has hosted plenty of rising acts.

More Events

Most nights bring touring and local bands along with DJ nights and themed dance parties. Check the calendar for ticketed shows.
