Caffè Lena

Caffè Lena is a legendary folk music listening room in downtown Saratoga Springs, about a 30-minute drive north of Albany, and one of the oldest continuously operating folk venues in the United States. Since opening in 1960, it has hosted a who's-who of folk and Americana artists early in their careers, and it remains a nonprofit dedicated to acoustic music.

Atmosphere and Setting

The room is intimate and reverent — a true listening room where audiences come to actually pay attention, in contrast to the background-music feel of many bar venues. That atmosphere carries over into its community jam nights as much as its ticketed concerts.

Bluegrass Jam

On select Wednesday evenings from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Caffè Lena hosts a Bluegrass Jam open to all — players and listeners alike are invited to join the circle for classic bluegrass, newgrass and folk favorites. The group Red Spruce typically opens with a few tunes before the circle takes over, with musicians leading songs and others providing backup. Newcomers are encouraged to bring simple, prepared tunes to keep the circle moving.

Other Programming

Caffè Lena's regular calendar features touring folk, Americana and singer-songwriter acts, along with its own open mic nights and songwriter showcases.

For Performers

The bluegrass jam is a welcoming, informal circle rather than a stage show, making it approachable for pickers of varying skill levels who want to play traditional tunes in a listening-room setting.
