Historic Community Gathering Place
Bynum Front Porch is a nonprofit organization that operates out of the historic Bynum General Store built in 1934. Located at 950 Bynum Road in Bynum North Carolina (part of Chatham County near Pittsboro and Siler City) this beloved community space has become one of the region's premier destinations for traditional music storytelling and cultural preservation.
The History of Bynum
Bynum was originally a cotton mill village set along the banks of the Haw River with the first mill built around 1872. As the mill grew the town flourished becoming a vibrant community where neighbors knew each other and children played along the riverbanks. At its peak Bynum had five stores two grist mills a movie theater and a school. The Bynum General Store opened in 1934 and served as the social center of the community.
When the mill closed in 1983 Bynum's community life began to change dramatically. The mill and school are long gone but the residents of Bynum remain vibrant and committed to preserving their community spirit. In 2001 neighbors created the Friday Night Music Series to help sustain the Bynum General Store and Post Office. By 2006 this effort formalized into Bynum Front Porch a nonprofit that leases the old general store and creates family-friendly events and programs that celebrate the community's rich history and bright future.
Bluegrass Jam Circle
The Bluegrass Jam Circle meets every second and fourth Saturday of the month from 10:00 AM until around noon. This open circle jam welcomes musicians of all skill levels and ages playing acoustic instruments only. Whether you pick or sing you're invited to bring your instrument or voice and join in making music at the historic Bynum General Store. The Circle Jam is free and open to the public and has become a beloved tradition for local bluegrass enthusiasts and those just discovering the genre.
Friday Night Music Series
Running from May through the end of August the Bynum Friday Night Music Series presents live performances every Friday from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The series began in 2001 and features a diverse array of bands spanning multiple musical genres including gospel folk blues rockabilly and bluegrass. Performances typically take place on the outdoor stage weather permitting with the option to move inside the air-conditioned general store during inclement weather.
The events are free to attend with a hat passed for voluntary contributions to support the performers. Food vendors are typically on-site and parking is available at the Bynum ball field or in the adjacent field. The series has built a reputation for bringing quality regional and local talent to this intimate historic setting.
Mill Town Yarns Performance Series
Bynum Front Porch's Mill Town Yarns series has earned recognition from the NC Storytellers Guild as one of the state's premier storytelling hubs. This monthly performance series features top storytellers singer-songwriters and other performers who share their craft within the historic walls of the Bynum General Store. The 2025-26 season features a mix of professional and local performers creating intimate one-of-a-kind experiences.
Past performers have included nationally and internationally beloved artists such as Lipbone Redding Bil Lepp Michael Reno Harrell and Josh Goforth. The series also showcases local acoustic favorites NC professional storytellers and Chatham County stories and songs. Events typically take place at 7:00 PM with some shows free (donations welcome) and others ticketed depending on the performer.
Community Programs and Services
Over the years Bynum Front Porch has hosted Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts community picnics and offered the facility for rent to the wider Bynum community for birthday parties baby showers wedding receptions and other celebrations. The organization has also given over $30000 in grants to Chatham County students to continue their education demonstrating a deep commitment to supporting the next generation.
Additional programs include Bynum's Byte Night held every other Thursday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM - a tech hangout for anyone curious about computers electronics or AI. The organization also hosts special events like community yard sales story slams and seasonal celebrations throughout the year.
The Venue Space
The Bynum General Store building maintains its historic character while serving as a versatile performance and gathering space. The interior can accommodate seated audiences for storytelling and concerts while the outdoor areas provide space for larger summer events. The building is located off Highway 15-501 making it accessible from Pittsboro Siler City Chapel Hill and other Triangle-area communities.
