Tuesday Bluegrass Jam @ Little Red Hen
Every Tuesday night the Little Red Hen in Seattle's Green Lake neighborhood fills with banjos and fiddles and mandolins and guitars. The weekly Bluegrass Jam is organized by the Outlanders Progressive Bluegrass Social Club and it has become one of the busiest bluegrass gatherings in the Pacific Northwest.
How the Night Works
The jam is built so players of every level have a place. Beginners are encouraged to show up around 7:00 PM for an informal picking circle. It is a relaxed and supportive way to learn tunes and practice taking breaks and get comfortable playing with others. Around 8:15 PM the stage set begins with more polished players taking the lead. Many nights the jam grows so big that circles spill out onto the sidewalk and into the parking lot.
What to Bring
Bring a banjo or fiddle or mandolin or guitar or bass or dobro and join in. Knowing a few bluegrass standards helps but the beginners circle is there for players who are still learning. Listeners are welcome too and the Hen is a great place to hear traditional and progressive bluegrass up close.
About the Outlanders
The Outlanders Progressive Bluegrass Social Club is led by host Stan Hall. The club runs several jams a week around Seattle and produces monthly shows that introduce new audiences to roots music. Stan has said the club stepped in after the pandemic when many longtime jams disappeared and players did not know where to go. The Tuesday jam at the Hen has become a home base for that community. About the Venue
The Little Red Hen opened in 1933 and has been at its Green Lake location since 1968. It is Seattle's legendary home of live country music and its only country western dance floor. When the bar faced eviction in 2025 bluegrass players turned out with instruments in hand to support the Save The Hen campaign. The eviction case was dismissed in September 2026 and the Tuesday jam plays on.

Billy Bodacious hosts a Sunday Open Mic Jam with country and blues and rock and roots music. The week also includes a Monday line dance party and Wednesday karaoke and live country bands Thursday through Saturday.
