A Historic Music Venue

AvantGarden stands as one of Houston's most distinctive and historically significant music venues, housed in a stunning 1896 Krafthouse in the heart of Montrose. This architectural gem has witnessed over a century of Houston history, evolving from a private home where Howard Hughes played as a child to its current incarnation as a vibrant artist collective and cultural hub.

The venue's journey through various identities - including stints as a halfway house, an abandoned building, The Mausoleum bar in the 1990s, and Helios in the early 2000s - adds layers of character that permeate the space today. Current owner Mariana Lemesoff has lovingly restored the property, creating a multi-level venue that seamlessly blends historic architecture with contemporary arts programming.

The New York Times recognized AvantGarden as one of Houston's must-visit destinations, and it's easy to see why. The venue features four distinct event spaces: an upstairs area perfect for dancing to DJs, a main bar and lounge downstairs, a front patio with fountain, and a beautiful covered back patio ideal for ceremonies and intimate performances.

What they offer

Three fully-stocked bars serve craft cocktails, while an on-site taco truck - voted best in Houston for nine consecutive years - ensures guests never go hungry. AvantGarden's commitment to supporting Houston's creative community manifests through an impressive weekly schedule of free and low-cost events. Monday nights belong to jazz, with the Cory Wilson Quartet and Houston Ensemble hosting an open jam session from 9:30 PM to 2 AM that attracts both seasoned professionals and emerging players.

Music Schedule

Tuesday features acoustic open mic at 7:30 PM, welcoming singer-songwriters and musicians of all genres. Wednesday brings the Write About Now poetry series, showcasing Houston's vibrant spoken word scene.

Thursday offers comedy open mic, and Friday nights feature burlesque performances with the Short and Sweet Speakeasy Cabaret. This diverse programming creates a venue where artists across disciplines can find their community.

The jazz jam has become particularly significant in Houston's music scene, with saxophonist Cory Wilson leading a quartet that provides professional-quality accompaniment for visiting musicians. The atmosphere balances serious musicianship with welcoming accessibility - first-timers receive the same respect as veterans, and the audience genuinely listens rather than treating music as background noise.

The Space

The venue's acoustics benefit from the historic building's architecture, with high ceilings and thoughtful layout creating intimate sonic spaces even when the venue fills to capacity. Beyond weekly programming, AvantGarden serves as a premier wedding and event venue, hosting celebrations in spaces that provide both historic charm and modern amenities.

The venue's capacity - 150 inside, 100 outside, and 50 on the patio - allows for events ranging from intimate gatherings to substantial celebrations. The combination of indoor and outdoor spaces gives event planners flexibility, while the building's inherent character eliminates the need for extensive decoration.

The venue's location in Montrose places it at the heart of Houston's most artistically vibrant neighborhood, surrounded by galleries, restaurants, and cultural institutions. Street parking and nearby lots make access relatively easy despite the urban setting.

The venue operates Monday through Friday from 7 PM to 2 AM (6 PM on Wednesdays and Thursdays), and Sunday from 4 PM to 11 PM, staying closed on Saturdays to accommodate private events and weddings. What distinguishes AvantGarden is its genuine commitment to arts accessibility.

While the venue could easily rely solely on private events and ticketed shows, it maintains free weekly programming that provides crucial performance opportunities for Houston's artistic community.

Jams and Open Mics

The jazz jam, open mic, poetry night, and comedy showcase all operate without cover charges, supported by bar sales and the venue's belief that cultural spaces should serve their communities. This philosophy, combined with the building's rich history and Lemesoff's careful stewardship, has created a venue that feels both timeless and urgently contemporary. Musicians particularly appreciate AvantGarden's professional approach to free events.

The sound system receives proper maintenance, staff members understand performance needs, and the venue treats artists with respect regardless of experience level. The Monday jazz jam provides proper backline equipment, the Tuesday open mic ensures quality sound reinforcement, and the Wednesday poetry night creates an atmosphere where words carry weight.

For Houston's creative community, AvantGarden represents something increasingly rare: a venue where artistic integrity and commercial viability coexist, where history informs present practice, and where diverse artistic disciplines share space and mutual support.
