Venue Description

The Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is a multi-purpose cultural venue housed in a historic building originally built in 1917 as the Walter Reed School. The facility has been restored and serves as a hub for arts and culture in the Southeast community of Newport News. The center features the 276-seat Ella Fitzgerald Theater named after the legendary First Lady of Song.

Event Spaces and Programs

The facility includes the Newport News Community Gallery for rotating exhibitions the Anderson Johnson Gallery with permanent folk art exhibits and meeting rooms for various events and activities. Beyond 25 Mics the center hosts visual arts exhibitions performing arts shows community events and educational programs. The space provides a professional setting for local and national artists to perform and showcase their work.
